Privacy Policy for Canvas Buddy
Last updated: August 18, 2026
Canvas Buddy is a browser extension that improves the Canvas LMS dashboard. This policy describes what data the extension uses and how it is handled.
Data we do not collect
Canvas Buddy does not collect, store on our servers, or sell:
- Your name, email, password, or Canvas login credentials
- Course content, grades, assignments, announcements, or messages
- Browsing history outside of usage analytics described below
We do not have user accounts. We do not sell personal information.
How the extension works
Canvas Buddy runs in your browser on your school's Canvas site. To show your dashboard, it requests data from your Canvas instance using your existing logged-in session (for example courses, assignments, announcements, notifications, and calendar data).
That Canvas data is used only to display the extension UI. It is not sent to us or to any server we operate.
Data stored on your device
The extension may save the following locally in your browser (Chrome storage or localStorage):
- Appearance settings (colors, background, title)
- Course order, hidden courses, and related dashboard preferences
- Custom course images you upload
- Whether analytics is enabled
This data stays on your device. Uninstalling the extension or clearing site/extension data removes it.
Analytics
If analytics is enabled, Canvas Buddy sends limited usage events to Plausible, a privacy-focused analytics service.
We send:
- Event name (for example a dashboard page view)
- A generic extension page URL (not the full Canvas page URL)
- The hostname of the Canvas site (for example
canvas.yourschool.edu)
We do not send cookies, names, emails, Canvas user IDs, course names, assignment details, or other personal content.
Analytics is on by default so we can understand how the extension is used. It can be turned off by manually setting the extension'sanalytics-enabled extension storage value to false.
Plausible's own policy: https://plausible.io/privacy
Permissions
- Storage - to save your settings and preferences on this device
- Host access (
*://*/*) - Canvas is hosted on many school domains. The extension uses this to detect a Canvas dashboard and call that site's Canvas API. It does not read unrelated websites for any other purpose.
Student's privacy
Canvas Buddy is intended for students and educators using Canvas. We do not knowingly collect personal information. Canvas data is processed only in your browser as described above. To respect student's privacy, we do not interact with 3rd-party services that collect identifiable student information to respect FERPA and other privacy regulations.
Changes
We may update this policy if the extension's data practices change. The “Last updated” date at the top will change when we do.
